Fine pitch lead screws are screws posing shafts with threads of fine pitch on their surface and a nut. They produce friction by sliding and not through rolling as in ball screws. They are characterized by high performance, long life expectancy, smooth and noiseless operation, self-aligning capability of nuts and accurate positioning over vast distances. They are usually employed to move tables, and other machine parts. Screws of this type render lead screws non-backdriveable, thereby eliminating the necessity for additional braking mechanism otherwise essential in vertical applications.
