Already an integral component of ABB’s range of positioners and robots, the motor and gear units are now available in comprehensive packages complete with cablings, serial measurement board (SMB) box, optimization software and safety options. The packages will optimize performance and cost-efficiency, and simplify the design, integration and operation of additional robot axes such as workpiece positioners, robot carriers, track motions, servo guns and indexing conveyors.

JLS Automation has selected the ABB IRB 360 FlexPicker™ robot for its new Osprey case packing system, designed for loading low profile wrapped or vacuum packed product into shallow shipping cases. The Osprey is the first case packing system in the industry designed for installation in high sanitation areas of food packaging plants, and, along with an innovative compact footprint, is able to be placed at the discharge point of primary packaging systems. The low profile case configuration is common for many meat, poultry, seafood, cheese and frozen food products.

ABB’s smallest controller was introduced in 2009 along with the introduction of the IRB 120, ABB’s smallest 6-axis robot. The compact controller will now support the IRB 120, IRB 140, IRB 260, IRB 360 FlexPicker™, IRB 1410 and IRB 1600 robot families, offering the benefits of a greatly reduced controller footprint and simplified commissioning to a wider range of applications.

ABB has released a new generation of workpiece positioners for robotic applications with improved load capacities and best-in-class motion control. The full range consists of nine models with load capacities ranging from 250 kg up to 5,000 kg. For the two most popular positioners, the IRBP K and the IRBP R the load capacities have been increased to 1,000 kg. These reliable, robust positioners are designed for manipulating workpieces during applications such as arc welding, thermal cutting, deburring and other metal finishing applications.
