Calbrite Stainless Steel Conduit up to Five Times Stronger than Aluminum Conduit

Press Release:
May 17, 2012 — HAMMOND, Ind. – CalbriteTM, the leading name in stainless steel conduit, fittings and accessories, based upon experience and internal observational testing, has determined its products to be more durable and non-corrosive than aluminum conduit and fittings. While aluminum is often flexible, stainless steel holds up against the rigorous wash-down procedures and chemical treatments required in applications such as clean rooms, food processing plants and potable water facilities. Internal tests and observations conducted by Calbrite in its Hammond, IN. research facility showed that stainless steel is two to five times stronger than aluminum depending upon the application and the environment.

“Calbrite stainless steel is effective against corrosion, frequently for up to 50 years, depending upon the environment. This helps our clients reduce their conduit system maintenance costs. The savings come from reduced material acquisition costs over the years and elimination of the need to remove and reinstall other conduit systems which have degraded over time,” said Matt Westerfield, director of sales and operations for Calbrite products.

Leading the industry in type 304 and type 316 UL-listed stainless steel conduit systems, Calbrite meets and exceeds the requirements for wash-down, food-safety/potable-water- safety. It also meets the specifications for plant cleanliness by HACCP, FDA, various state agencies, and other regulatory requirements. Calbrite is UL6A listed, UL514A, and 514B listed, and many of its products are ARRA-compliant.

Stainless steel provides excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosives, extreme temperatures, and most atmospheric and industrial environments. Even when scratched, stainless steel’s exposed metal “self-heals,” oxidizing over the abrasion to protect against further corrosion.

It retains its structural and anti-corrosive properties in temperatures ranging from cryogenic to hundreds of degrees and does not burn or emit dangerous smoke and carcinogens like other materials. Environmentally friendly, stainless steel is also 100% recyclable.

“Stainless steel is the highest-quality, most durable, easiest to install, UL-approved conduit material available,” said Westerfield. “Corrosion damages equipment and costs companies downtime as well as expensive maintenance and repairs. Stainless steel significantly cuts down on corrosion, reducing MRO expenditures and results in the lowest cost-of-ownership over a conduit system’s lifetime.”
