Indexing Plungers Provide Rapid Locating, Secure Holding in Fixtures

Press Release:
Mar 23, 2009 — Fast, repetitive locating...accurate positioning...secure holding...simple, precise indexing and repositioning...all provided by the performance of Index Plungers (often referred to as locking bolts) from Kipp® —one of Germany’s premier manufacturers of manual operating elements and workholding components. The entire lineup—a selection of over 150 items with various size, material, and operational configurations—are available from Fixtureworks® (Fraser, MI), a leading North American manufacturer and supplier of workholding technologies and machine tool components.

Indexing plungers, when incorporated into OEM designs, fixtures, jigs and other workholding mechanisms are designed for positioning applications that require fast and easy locating and relocating of work materials. When engaged, the nose of the plunger extends into the workpiece, helping to hold its location. Lifting up or pulling back on the handle retracts the plunger back into the plunger body and disengages the nose from the workpiece, thus allowing part movement.

Fixtureworks’ extensive offering of indexing plungers includes those configured for manual operation with pull handles—five-lobe plastic handles and knobs, plus mushroom, ball, and T-handles. Other parts are provided without handles and feature a threaded stud for mounting of custom handle designs (if needed), or to integrate with pneumatic devices for automated actuation and withdrawal.

The plungers are available in metric or inch sizes, and options of steel with black oxide finish, stainless steel and aluminum bodies, with hardened steel plunger pins. The selection also includes plungers with or without lock-out (a slight rotation of the handle keeps the pin in the retracted position until manually reengaged). Typical mounting of the indexing plungers is via tapped holes in fixture plates, though Fixtureworks offers multiple sizes and styles of pull pins having a non-threaded barrel designed for welding into position along with a separate plunger assembly that then thread into the housing.

In addition to Indexing Plungers, Fixtureworks offers Kipp full range of products including the Novo-Grip® lineup, plus spring plungers, rest and riser pads, tension levers and torque handles, knurled nuts, ball knobs, and handwheels. Among Fixtureworks other 20,000-plus items are Fairlane® Products’ grippers, rest pads, Swivots® swivel/pivoting positioning components, Quick Release ball-lock pins, rollers and bumpers; Imao® clamps, part supports, risers, T-nuts, sliding mounts, springs, grid plates and blocks; OK-Vise® single and double wedge clamp designs; and Modern Industries mPower™ product line which includes quick change precision locating and mounting systems and modular tooling, plates and columns.

Fixtureworks® offers over 150 design and size variations of Indexing Plungers from Kipp® - fixturing components designed to provide fast, accurate locating of workpieces, and to allow fast and precise repositioning.
