An ingot is mass of metal heated past the melting point, and then recast, typically into the form of a bar or block, for subsequent rolling or forging. A billet is a semi-finished length of material such as aluminum, steel, titanium, etc., hot rolled from an ingot to be worked in a rolling mill or other process. Also known as a bloom, slab or sheet-bar, their chief differences are in their cross sectional areas in ratio of width to thickness, and in their intended use.
