A foot check valve is a placed in the water source below a surface pump. It allows the pump to pull water up, but does not allow the water to flow back down, thus keeping the pipe full of water, and "primed" while the pump is not running. Foot valves come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. The most common materials are brass and plastic.

Check valves are used to prevent the reversal of flow in a line. When open and under flow pressure, the checking mechanism will move freely in the media, offering very little resistance and minimal pressure drop.
