Sinker EDM Companies
A sinker EDM, also known as a ram EDM or cavity EDM, uses a shaped electrode to remove metal from the work piece. The electrode is generally formed into a shape that is an exact reverse of the shape of metal to be removed. A power supply is connected to both the work piece and the shaped electrode, and this generates an electrical potential between them. As the shaped electrode is brought close to the work piece, sparks are created between them, which gradually erode the work piece to fit into the shape of the electrode. This machining process requires the work piece to be completely submerged in a bath of insulating liquid, such as oil. Sinker EDMs are generally used in applications that require accurate, intricate, and complex 3-D shapes, such as injection mold tooling, die tooling, as well as scientific research apparatus. In addition, sinker EDM machining is commonly used on hard and exotic metals, such as hastalloy, inconel, and tool-steel.

Manufacturer, Contract Manufacturer Unlike the de-ionized water medium used in wire EDM, sinker EDM uses an oil based die-electric fluid (basically a highly refined form of kerosene with rust inhibitors, etc.) Very large filters constantly remove particles from the 10,000 degree centigrade sparks that are discharging, at rates up to a half million sparks per second, but the work tank itself is not a very clean environment. This is not conducive to submerging whole mechanical assembly’s in the work tank or many of our high precision indexing systems I would like to use.
