Assigned User Privileges Increase Network Security with Model 4242 A/B Switch

Press Release:
Feb 27, 2012 — Electro Standards Laboratories, Cranston, RI, announces the Model 4242 DB25 A/B switch with 10/100 Base-T LAN access and Graphical User Interface (GUI) Remote. The Model 4242 enables sharing a single port DB25 interface device connected to the COMMON port between two other devices connected to the A and B ports.

Proper authentication is required for remote access to the SNMP 10/100 Base-T connection. Depending on assigned user privileges, users can be assigned rights to monitor status, control switch functions, setup users, and configure the LAN access port. An additional security feature is the ability to remotely lockout the front-panel control.

This switch utilizes user-friendly graphical user interface software. To connect to the switch from a workstation with access to the LAN that the Model 4242 LAN port is connected to, simply launch a standard Web browser and type in the appropriate IP address. The Java Applet will be automatically uploaded from the switch upon connection. The environment requirement for the GUI is Java 1.6 and above. The Java Applet can also be accessed from the DeviceInstaller application. The GUI with simple point-and-click operation allows changing the switch position by clicking on radio button “A” or “B” as desired. Locking and unlocking the front panel pushbutton can be accomplished by clicking on the “Locked” or “Unlocked” radio buttons.

Time synchronization is always an issue in the network environment. The SNMP module includes a real time clock on board. It can keep the correct time even if power is lost. In addition, it has the ability to automatically synchronize its time with a standard time server on the Internet using standard NTP protocol if the server has Internet access.

The Model 4242 switches all 25 pins of the DB25 interface and it is transparent to data speed and format. The switch retains its last switch position in the event of a power loss and continues to pass data. Electro Standards’ staff of knowledgeable sales engineers is available to assist with product and application questions; call 401-943-1164 for assistance.
