Saelig Introduces Tiny USB-to-SDIO Host IC

Press Release:
Apr 7, 2011 — Extending the capabilities of SD and SDIO devices into the world of USB, and also allowing expansion of Laptop and Desktop PC's into the world of SD and SDIO devices, VUB300 from Saelig Co., provides a universal SDIO port to hosts that only have USB capabilities. VUB300 is a USB 2.0 device operating at Hi-Speed (480 Mbps). The SDIO Host function conforms to the SDIO Host specification with a generic USB “wrapped” interface to extend SDIO host controller support to the USB bus. A unique and important user benefit of VUB300 is its universal support for any SDIO device, allowing it to run with any manufacturer's existing driver and application software without the need for any modification - drivers integrate into the standard operating system SD/SDIO driver stack. Key features of the device include low power, small package size and high data throughput. With a USB2.0 Hi-Speed connection, transfers of up to 480 Mbps are possible, but VUB300 is also backward-compatible with Full-Speed USB2.0 and USB1.1.

VUB300’s SDIO interface supports 1bit or 4bit SDIO and SD Interrupt with automatic card detection. It is also suitable for bus-powered applications, requiring < 450mW from a 3.3V supply. RoHS-compliant VUB300 is instantly live on power-up and features an integrated USB 2.0 Hi-Speed PHY. VUB300 is available as a 36-pin 6 x 6mm QFN extended temperature (-40 to +85°C) device.

Applications for VUB300 include: PC motherboards, Express cards, USB Dongles, Embedded PCs, UMPC, SmartPhones, portable internet devices, etc. Supported operating systems include: Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP Windows Vista 32, Windows Vista 64, Windows 7, Windows Mobile/PocketPC/CE*, Apple MAC OSX.

Designed by Elan Digital, one of Europe’s leading interface experts, VUB300 is available now from $5.30 (10K) each from Saelig Co. Inc. Pittsford NY. A development board is also available including hardware, device drivers for all major OS and full documentation.
