A Buna-N O ring is an O-ring seal manufactured from the synthetic elastomer Buna-N, commonly known as nitrile rubber. Nitrile rubber is a synthetic rubber copolymer with high resistance to hydrocarbon fuels and petroleum-based oils. This property, combined with its operating temperature range from -65°F to +275°F, has made it one of the most commonly used elastomers in the production of O-rings. Buna-N is also superior to most other elastomers due to its good resistance to compression set, as well as tearing and abrasion. Despite its limitations for use in certain applications due to incompatibility with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, ozone, and sunlight, Buna-N O-rings are used in a wide range of industries, including automobile and petroleum.
